The best AM5 chipset is the least expensive platform that supports your exact CPU and every connection your build will use. A higher chipset tier can provide more expansion, faster interfaces, or a simpler out-of-box path, but it does not make the same compatible processor and graphics card automatically faster.

AMD says its 600-series and 800-series Socket AM5 motherboards support AM5 processors, including Ryzen 7000, 8000, and 9000. A 600-series board may require a BIOS update for a Ryzen 8000 or 9000 processor. A620 vs B650

B650 vs B850

B650 and B850 are the comparison to make for many mainstream builds. B650 can save money when the model already has a safe BIOS path and the right layout. B850 gives you a newer platform generation and AMD lists a direct PCIe 5.0 x4 NVMe path as part of its current platform specification.

B850 vs X870

AMD's current specifications list both B850 and X870 with up to 36 usable PCIe lanes. The important platform differences are the generation of the graphics connection, the number of PCIe 5.0 lanes, and USB4.

X870 provides PCIe 5.0 for the processor-direct graphics connection and makes USB4 standard. B850 lists PCIe 4.0 for the direct graphics connection and USB4 as optional. Both list a direct PCIe 5.0 x4 NVMe path.

When X670 or X670E Still Makes Sense

Does the Chipset Change Gaming Performance?
